Modern Foreign Languages
Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
As set out in the Primary National Curriculum 2014, learning a Modern Foreign Language is a statutory requirement for children within KS2. At Gordon Primary School, our Modern Foreign Language is Spanish and we have elected to teach it throughout our school. We believe that a rich and varied MFL curriculum gives children the confidence to communicate in the languages they learn and provides them with a strong, language-learning foundation that will benefit them as they move into Key Stage 3.
In learning Spanish, we aim to inspire children to travel and use the language in other Spanish-speaking countries; Spanish is spoken by more than 400 million people, worldwide, and is the most spoken language in 21 nations; it is the 2nd most spoken language in the USA, after English.
Children who learn additional languages are also able to learn about other cultures and develop empathy and understanding for people who are different to themselves. Spanish teaching at Gordon Primary School is part of the school's commitment to providing a curriculum that is exciting, broad and well balanced and offers children opportunities to broaden their horizons and learn new skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
