Phonics

At Gordon Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. approach to develop reading skills.  

In our Nursery, children develop early reading skills through fun, practical activities. They explore stories and nursery rhymes with adults and learn bout the sounds that the different letters make.

Daily phonics sessions take place in Reception and KS1 classes. In a systematic way, children learn to match letters and sounds and blend the sounds to read and decode words. To ensure that the children reach the age-appropriate standards, progress in phonics is checked every half term.

Any children who join Gordon Primary in KS2, are assessed for phonics and reading, so that appropriate interventions can be put in place to ensure progress.
